Memorial Fund Scholarship

News

Please consider encouraging deserving students from your institution to apply for the IMACC Memorial Fund Scholarship. Though the faculty’s responsibility in the process is deemed as recommender rather than nominator, it is still very much the hope and desire that faculty will initiate the scholarship application process by making their qualified students aware of the award, by writing those recommendation letters, and by encouraging and helping the qualified students with the application process. Complete information about the IMACC Memorial Fund Scholarship, including the Faculty Recommendation Form, Student Application Form, and an informational flyer to post on your campus, is provided by clicking on “Memorial Fund Scholarship” at the IMACC website, www.imacc.org. Please add your name and contact information to the flyer so that students can come to you with any questions about the application process!  [We need to clean up this paragraph.]

Again, please encourage your deserving students to apply. For the applicant to be considered, the faculty recommendation form, the student application form, and the student’s supporting materials must be completed and received by the IMACC Memorial Fund Scholarship Committee Chairperson Angie Gum no later than March 1.

Here is a Memorial Fund flyer  [file needs to be copied] you can print and post at your school.

Philosophy

The IMACC Scholarship is awarded annually to a student attending an Illinois two-year or four-year college meeting all of the eligibility criteria stated below and selected by the IMACC Scholarship Committee. The scholarship is awarded in memory of James Armstrong, a University of Illinois Professor until his death. Mr. Armstrong was instrumental in establishing the Allerton Conferences and in fostering better relations between two-year and senior colleges.

The scholarship provides approximately $750 or more to the selected recipient to help defray the costs encountered at an institution of higher education. The money may be used for any qualified educational expense.

Eligibility Criteria

Students meeting all of the criteria may apply for the IMACC Scholarship. If, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no bona fide candidate, the scholarship will not be awarded that year. The IMACC Board may elect at the spring meeting to carry over the funds to the next year. The decision of the Committee is final.

  1. The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. The individual must have a cumulative grade point average of B or better; he/she must be pursuing an education at some institution of higher learning in the State of Illinois with a high demonstrated potential to complete the program and must have earned at least 30 semester hours at a community college.
  2. An applicant must be intending to complete a degree in mathematics education (preferred), or mathematics.
  3. Each applicant must be recommended by a current member of IMACC or faculty from an institutional member who must submit a statement of his/her rationale for supporting the applicant. This written statement must be sent to the Chair of the Selection Committee under separate cover from that of the student application. The written recommendation must not exceed one double-spaced typewritten page. Four copies are required. It is emphasized that the person recommending a student shall not assist the student in the writing of his/her personal statement.
  4. The applicant must submit an application form and transcript of courses and grades. Details concerning career objectives, work experiences, financial need, general philosophy of education, and other information that is felt to be helpful in assisting the Selection Committee should be included. The written application must not be longer than five double-spaced standard typewritten pages. Four copies are required. These copies must be sent under separate cover to the Chair of the Selection Committee.
  5. The deadline for receiving applications is March 1 of the school year.
  6. The scholarship will be awarded to selected applicants after receiving a written verification from the college records office that the applicant has enrolled in an institution of higher education in the State of Illinois as a full-time student. Full-time student status shall be decided by the institution requirements. Enrollment verification must be sent to the IMACC treasurer by March 1 of the calendar year following the candidate’s selection. Failure to verify enrollment will result in the disqualification of the applicant.
  7. The scholarship will be awarded to an individual student only once. The student may, however, apply a maximum of two times.
